Iranian academics ask UN chief to make Al-Saud stand in war tribunal

TEHRAN (FNA)- Thousands of Iranian university teachers and professors in a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for trial of the Saudi officials at a war tribunal for committing crimes against humanity in Yemen.

In their letter on Sunday, 8,245 Iranian professors demanded the prosecution and trial of the Saudi officials for their aggression, war crimes and genocide in Yemen, and called for setting up a special court, similar to the one held for the former Yugoslavian officials, to try them.

They also underlined the necessity for sending humanitarian aids to the Yemeni people, and said all international relief organizations should be requested to dispatch food and medical aid to Yemen.

"You should declare the attack on the independent state of Yemen as an act of aggression by the Saudi regime and its allies, and demand the international community to impose arms embargos against the aggressive governments," the letter said, addressing Ban.

Saudi Arabia has been striking Yemen for 39 days now to restore power to fugitive president Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh. The Saudi-led aggression has so far killed at least 3,163 Yemenis, including hundreds of women and children.

Hadi stepped down in January and refused to reconsider the decision despite calls by Ansarullah revolutionaries of the Houthi movement.

Despite Riyadh's claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi warplanes are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.

On April 21, the monarchy declared end to Yemen airstrikes after five weeks of bombings, but airstrikes are still underway.
