Zarif leaves Tehran for Algiers to attend NAM ministerial meeting

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Monday left Tehran for the Algerian capital of Algiers to partake in a ministerial conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

During the conference in Algeria, foreign ministers from the NAM member states are to make decisions about the 17th summit of the movement, due to be held in Venezuela next year.

Foreign Minister Zarif is scheduled to deliver a speech at the conference. He will also meet his counterparts and officials from the NAM member states on the sidelines of the meeting.

The ministerial conference in Algiers will also include a meeting of the NAM Committee on Palestine, whose agenda has been set by the NAM Coordinating Bureau in New York.

On his way to Africa, the Iranian top diplomat is having a stopover in Turkeys Istanbul to hold a meeting with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Tehrans peaceful nuclear program.

Ashton liaises with Iran on behalf of six world powers (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany) in marathon talks with the aim of hammering out a final nuclear deal, meant to end years of Western standoff over Tehrans nuclear energy program.
