Iran welcomes Lebanon unity government

Irans Foreign Ministry has welcomed the formation of a compromise government by Lebanons Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam after months of political deadlock.
This measure is the product of solidarity and understanding between all Lebanese tribes and groups, Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said on Sunday.

Afkham congratulated the Lebanese officials and people on the breakthrough event and reaffirmed Irans continuing support for Lebanons stability and security.
She expressed hope that the formation of the new government will bring different tribes and political groups closer together and clear the way for development and prosperity in Lebanon.
Salamon Saturday hailed the formation of a new government. "After 10 months of efforts, of patience, a government protecting the national interest is born."

The unity government includes both members of the resistance movement Hezbollah and the camp of former prime minister, Saad Hariri.

"It is a unifying government and the best formula to allow Lebanon to confront challenges," Salam said.

Lebanon has been without a government since Salam's nomination last April due to divisions between Hezbollah and Hariri's Future Movement party over Syria.

Hariris party supports opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while Hezbollah backs the Syrian presidents supporters.

Several attempts to form a government have failed over the past months.

Salam reportedly named Samir Moqbel as deputy prime minister and defense minister. Nuhad Mashnouq, Gebran Bassil, and Ali Hasan Khalil were also appointed as interior, foreign and finance ministers, respectively.

The United Nations, the European Union, France, Britain and the United States have all welcomed the new Lebanese government, vowing to work with Salam and his ministers to help Lebanon establish security and stability.
