Tehran, Jan 30, IRNA -- Chairman of the Center for Strategic Research (CSR) affiliated to the Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati Thursday described Syria as the ?backbone? of resistance against the Zionist regime.
Velayati made the remarks in a meeting with the visiting Leader of the Lebanese Democratic Party Talal Arslan.

The former foreign minister of Iran said without the help of Syria, the Lebanese Resistance could not successfully fight against the Zionist regime.

?What is underway in Syria is rooted in a plot made by the US, Zionist regime and the reactionary forces in the region,? Velayati said.

He added, ?the world is currently witnessing the worst struggle against Muslims and their interests which is underway by the US and Zionists in the region from several years ago.?

?In order to damage the anti-Israel resistance, enemies started to make conspiracies against Syria but Syria was not their final destination. They were to spread tension to Iraq, Lebanon and Iran as well as their other allies in the region,? Velayati said.

He added those who support terrorism and extremism in the region could not tolerate cordial relations between Iran and its regional allies.
