Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says Iran must be involved in the implementation of the 2012 Geneva communiqué on the crisis in Syria.“It is necessary to engage Iran in the common efforts towards the fulfillment of the Geneva communiqué devoid of attempts to interpret it either way,” Lavrov said at the opening of the Geneva II conference on Syria in the Swiss town of Montreux on Wednesday.
The long-awaited international conference on the ongoing crisis in Syria is believed to be the most serious effort yet towards ending the crisis in the Middle Eastern country as representatives from the Syrian government and the main opposition meet there for the first time.
“The essence of this document is that issues related to the future of Syria must be resolved by the consent of the government and the opposition,” said Lavrov.
The 2012 Geneva communiqué outlines measures for a transition of power in Syria.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said earlier Wednesday that the Islamic Republic is not very hopeful about the success of the Geneva II conference.
He said that Iran seeks the establishment of peace and stability, the end of war and the fight against terrorism in Syria.
Syria has been gripped by deadly crisis since March 2011 with the Western powers and their regional allies-- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey-- supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the violence.
