Zarif to leave for Turkmenistan Monday: Iran envoy

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will visit Turkmenistan to attend the 13th session of the Iran-Turkmenistan Joint Economic Commission, an envoy says.

Irans Ambassador to Turkmenistan Mohammad Mousa Hashemi Golpaygani told Fars news agency that Zarif will leave Tehran for Ashgabat on Monday at the head of a high-ranking politico-economic delegation.

In addition to taking part in the economic meeting, the top Iranian diplomat will also sit down with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov, the envoy said.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Golpaygani added, over 80 Iranian businessmen will also hold talks with their Turkmen counterparts in a joint commercial conference to discuss investment in the Central Asian country.
The envoy said that the administration of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is keen to develop all-out relations with Turkmenistan.
The 12th session of the Iran-Turkmenistan Joint Economic Commission was held in the Iranian capital, Tehran, in July 2012, during which the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding to increase trade volume and economic relations.

Iran and Turkmenistan have had official diplomatic relations since Turkmenistan's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Iran was the first country to recognize Turkmenistan as an independent nation.

Since then, the two countries have enjoyed good relations and have cooperated in the economic and energy sectors.
