Ashton welcomes invitation to Iran: Spokesman

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton has welcomed an invitation by Irans Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to visit the Islamic Republic.

Ashtons spokesman Michael Mann confirmed the invitation on Saturday and pointed to her intention to visit Iran to further discuss the Geneva agreement.
Ashton has noted with interest" her invitation to Tehran, Mann said in Brussels, further adding that the EUs top diplomat has already indicated that she intends to visit Tehran as the work towards a comprehensive agreement progresses.
Senior Iranian nuclear negotiator Seyyed Abbas Araqchi had previously announced Zarif's invitation to Ashton.

Mrs. Ashton has an open invitation from Mr. Zarif to travel to Iran, Araqchi said on Saturday.

After days of intense negotiations, Iran and six powers - Russia, China, France, Britain, the US and Germany - reached an interim deal on November 24, 2013 in the Swiss city to set the stage for the settlement of the dispute over the Islamic Republics nuclear energy program.

Under the Geneva deal, the six countries undertook to provide Iran with some sanctions relief in exchange for Iran agreeing to limit certain aspects of its nuclear activities during a six-month period. It was also agreed that no nuclear-related sanctions would be imposed on Iran within the same time frame.
