Leader of Lebanon's Free Patriotic Movement Michel Aoun has described religious extremism as the main challenge facing the countries in the Middle East.

In a meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Beirut Ghazanfar Roknabadi on Tuesday, Aoun termed radicalism as the most serious trouble for regional states, including Syria and Lebanon, adding that many regional and world countries have recognized the need for a campaign against this ominous issue.

He further noted that the spread of extremist movements in Syria has underlined the need for a political solution to the crisis that has gripped Syria for nearly three years, and that everybody acknowledges the fact that extremist groups have no place in Syria and the Middle East.

Roknabadi, for his part, called for unity among regional nations in their fight against extremism and Takfiri movements.
�The vicious acts of terrorist groups in Syria have incited regional nations� hatred against them, and a large number of their foreign sponsors have now stopped their support and refuse to accept them back in their own countries,� the Iranian ambassador pointed out.
Syria has been gripped by a deadly crisis since 2011. Reports indicate that the Western powers and their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey - are supporting the militants operating inside the country.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in the violence.
