Iran MPs to visit blast site outside Embassy in Beirut

An Iranian lawmaker says a parliamentary delegation will leave for Beirut to examine the site of the twin bomb blasts that targeted the Iranian Embassy in the Lebanese capital.
The team of Iranian legislators will leave Tehran on Wednesday, said member of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Evaz Heidarpour.

The delegation is headed by Mansour Haqiqatpour, another member of the committee, and the spokesperson of the committee Hossein Naqavi Hosseini, might join the delegation if necessary, the lawmaker added.

During this visit the parliamentary delegation will attend the memorial ceremony for Iran's cultural attach to Beirut, Hojjatoleslam Ebrahim Ansari, who was martyred in the terrorist incident, Heidarpour added.

Earlier, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri confirmed that the bomb blasts were carried out by militants linked to al-Qaeda terrorist group.

The two blasts outside Iran's diplomatic mission in the southern neighborhood of Janah in Beirut left at least 25 people dead, including six Iranian nationals, and wounded over 150 others on Tuesday.

According to reports, the first explosion took place when a bomber blew his explosives near the gate of the embassy, and the second blast happened just meters away when a car bomb went off.

An al-Qaeda-linked group, Abdullah Azzam Brigades, has claimed responsibility for the twin bombings.

Following the attacks, the United Nations Security Council and the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued statements and strongly condemned the blasts.
