Senior MP stresses Syria’s readiness to confront US military strike

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian legislator underlined the preparedness of the Syrian government, nation and army to give a crushing response to any potential US aggression.

“The US adventurism in the region will be a suitable opportunity for Syria to firmly confront the Americans,” member of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Mohammad Saleh Jokar told FNA on Sunday.

He reiterated that Syrians are fully ready to repel enemies’ threats, and said, “The Americans have not learned from their defeats in Iraq and Afghanistan and in case of a military strike against Syria, another defeat will be recorded for them.”

Jokar pointed to the problems the US faces in attacking Syria, and said, “Protecting the Zionist regime's security has been one of the main reasons behind the US decision to attack Syria, but now the US has come to realize that in case of a military strike against Damascus, the security of the Zionists will be seriously threatened.”

The US and other western countries have adopted the rhetoric of war against Syria over allegations that the Syrian government was behind a recent chemical attack near Damascus.

The call for military strike intensified after the militants operating inside Syria and the foreign-backed Syrian opposition claimed on August 21 that hundreds had been killed in a government chemical attack on militant strongholds in the Damascus suburbs of Ain Tarma, Zamalka and Jobar. The Syrian government has strongly denied the claim, accusing the militants of the attack.

US President Barack Obama has provided no evidence whatsoever to the UN Security Council to prove his claim.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called on President Obama to provide the UN Security Council with documents and evidence showing that the Syrian army has used chemical weapons against the civilians in Damascus.

Putin has underlined that no evidence has been presented on the use of chemical weapons by the government of Syria, adding that Russia does not believe that the Syrian government has used chemical weapons since they have been advancing in the war and did not need to do it.
