Iran's foreign minister advises US forces in Syria to go home

Iran
The Iran Project - Iranian foreign minister advised the United States to withdraw its military forces from Syria, accusing Washington and its allies of attempting to regroup terrorists in the Arab country.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian made the statement during a joint press conference with his Syrian counterpart Faisal al-Mekdad.

"We advise the American troops to return home and the American authorities to leave the region to the people of the region," Amirabdollahian said in Damascus on Wednesday.

He further emphasized that the US should leave the region and allow the people of Syria to determine their own future.

Iranian top diplomat also expressed Iran's support for Syria and its commitment to fighting terrorism.

"During today's talks, we discussed the continuation of the fight against terrorism, and the US efforts to reorganize these [terror] groups," the Iranian minister said of his earlier talks with Mekdad.

He condemned Israel's attacks on Syria and promised that they would not go unanswered. Israel has been using Syria's occupied Golan Heights as a base for its military aggression against the Arab nation, with attacks intensifying since 2011 when Syria faced foreign-backed militancy and terrorism.

Since 2014, the US has deployed forces and military equipment in Syria without any authorization from Damascus or a United Nations mandate under the pretext of fighting Daesh. The Takfiri terrorist group had emerged as Washington was running out of excuses to extend its regional meddling or enlarge it in scale.

American forces sustain their illegal presence on Syrian soil, although Damascus and its allies -- including Iran, which has been lending military advisory support to the Syrian army -- defeated Daesh in late 2017.
