Afghanistan only released 15 mln liters of water share in Harirud

The Head of the Department of Environment Ali Salajegheh says Afghanistan released only 15 million liters of water share in the Harirud River to flow towards Iran.

Speaking to reporters after attending a cabinet meeting, Salajegheh said that, "Even though the rulers of Afghanistan talk about accepting the Harirud River water release agreement, in practice only 15 million liters of water have been released instead of 850 million liters."

"We have asked the Afghan ruling body to hold a meeting several times, but they did not accept it," he added.

He added that the energy minister has been tasked by the Raeisi government to follow up on the issue.

Meanwhile, There are satellite images showing a considerable amount of water at the two controversial dams built by Afghanistan on the Helmand River shared with Iran, contrary to the Talibans claims of water shortages there.

he images indicate there is a good amount of water in the reservoir of Kajaki Dam, and the water has filled about 80% of the dams capacity.

Tensions have been escalating between Iran and Afghanistan over the Talibansviolationsof the 1973 treaty on shared water resources.

s per the provisions of the treaty, Afghanistan is bound to release 820 million cubic meters of water from the Helmand River annually, but Iranian authorities have repeatedly said that Kabul has been withholding its share.
