The Members of Irans Guardian Council have reelected Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati as the chairman of the legislative and electoral supervisory body.Ayatollah Jannati was reelected at a meeting of the councilors on Wednesday, during which the 12-member body also voted for Mohammad Reza Alizadeh as the deputy chairman of the council.
Under the Iranian Constitution, the Guardian Council, a 12-member body consisting of six legal experts and six Islamic jurists, is tasked with vetting legislative and presidential candidates, supervising elections and overseeing the bills passed in Majlis for conformity with Islamic principles.
The development came a day after Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei reappointed three Islamic jurist members of the Guardian Council and also appointed a new jurist to the key supervisory body.
In one decree, the Leader reappointed Ayatollah Mohammad Momen, Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi and Ayatollah Seyyed Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi to another six-year term as the Islamic jurist members of the council.
In a separate decree, Ayatollah Khamenei also appointed Hojjatoleslam Mehdi Shabzendedar as the newest jurist member of the body, replacing recently deceased member Ayatollah Gholamreza Rezvani.
Earlier this week, members of Iran's Majlis elected three legal experts to the Guardian Council for a new six-year term.
Mohsen Esmaeili, Sam Savadkouhi, and Nejatollah Ebrahimian were the three legal experts elected to the Council on Saturday. Abbas Kadkhodaei, who had served at the Guardian Council for two consecutive terms, failed to win enough votes for a third term.
