An Iranian lawmaker has warned against the consequences of Egyptian Armys intervention in the North African countrys ongoing democratization process, saying militarism will be detrimental to democracy.Militarism does not favor democracy. The Army must defend the great Egyptian people against foreign threats, Mansour Haqiqatpour, member of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on Tuesday.
He added that continuation of tensions and conflict in Egypt is worrisome and will only serve the interests of the US and the Israeli regime.
The Iranian legislator called on influential figures and grand clerics in Egypt to intervene and help resolve the conflict within the country's geographical borders.
The Egyptian people must practice democracy in order to avoid being exploited by the US and the usurping Zionist regime [of Israel], Haqiqatpour stated.
On Monday, Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi dismissed as unacceptable the Egyptian armys intervention in the political affairs of the North African country, saying foreign hands are at work in Egypt.
Egypt has been the scene of rival rallies and clashes between thousands of supporters and opponents of the ousted president, Mohamed Morsi, as political turmoil escalates in the North African country.
Morsi was unseated on July 3, and the Chief Justice of Egypts Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mansour, was sworn in as interim president of Egypt on July 4.
Morsi is reportedly being held preventively by the military. Senior army officials say he might face formal charges over accusations made by his opponents.
