Era of EU political promises over: Iran's envoy

IRNA Irans Ambassador to London Hamid Baeidinejad described Irans decision to reduce its commitments under the JCPOA as serious, saying that the era of EUs political promises is over and they should spend for it.

He made the remarks in a meeting with reporters and researchers of British think tanks in Irans Embassy on Tuesday.

Referring to Irans self-restraint after US irresponsible withdrawal from JCPOA, he said that if the remaining parties think that Iran should continue to be patient, they make mistake and this is not possible, as all should work for saving it.

Irans decision to suspend certain commitments under JCPOA is a well-calculated move in compliance with political and legal considerations, he said.

Iran does not seek to undermine JCPOA; rather it aims to strengthen it, he said, noting that to that effect, Iran suspended two commitments and gave the EU 60 days to execute its commitments under the deal.

We did not take the decision hurriedly and excitedly and provided the European parties to fulfill their commitments, he said, noting that unfortunately, they could not take proper decision due to pressure and lack of risk seeking.

Irans move carries a main message and that is inviting all to take decision in the last moments, Baeidinejad said, hoping that Iran's message would be heard and taken seriously.

He also warned that if necessary measures are not taken within 60 days, Iran will enforce the second phase of its measures.

Asked about EUs reaction to Irans recent decision, he said that after US exit from the deal, efforts were made to convince the EU to take practical measures, but this did not happen and Iran was forced to take new measure.

They have heard Irans message and thats for the same reason that they have increased their contacts with the US, but the fact is that Iran cannot count on promises and what matters are practical steps, Baeidinejad said.

Currently, the ball is in the Europeans court and they should take objective measures in this respect.

Responding to a question to what extent the EU is capable of meeting Irans demands, the envoy said that that only Iran make all sacrifices to salvage the deal is not acceptable and will yield nothing.

It is understandable that they are unable to fulfill their commitments due to pressures but this cannot negate their responsibilities and not justify the fact that Iran continue to remain in the deal alone, he said, noting that they should pay for it.

Describing EU as a powerful bloc, he said this is not acceptable that it cannot take moves in some cases.

On Irans probable exit from NPT, he said that this has been one of Irans options, as it has not been able to benefit from its membership in the NPT.

However, it is a priority at present and it is in fact the last option, Beidinejad said.

If the EU fails to find a solution for Irans oil exports within 60 days, Iran will move on the next phase, he said, noting that one of the measures in the next stage will be returning to Arak earlier capacities.
