Iran calls for int'l regulations on internet to confront US unilateralism

FNA - Iran's Communications Minister Azari Jahromi stressed the need for the world states to set regulations and rules for the cyberspace to stop the United States' continued hegemony and unilateralism.

"There are some challenges in the International Communication Union (ICU); one such problem pertains to the fact that some states are after regulations only in area of communications and avoid entering the sphere of the internet as they believe that such rules and regulations should be adopted within the framework of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICAAN) which is under the US hegemony," Jahromi said, addressing a forum in Tehran on Tuesday.

He blasted the approach, saying it only promotes unilateralism in the development of the ICT. "If we keep mum about it, we will face the powerful unilateralism exercised by certain western states in area of ICT and internet."

Jahromi, meantime, expressed pleasure that a number of western states are after finding a way to end unilateral approaches in the sphere of the internet.

ICAAN is a nonprofit organization responsible for coordinating the maintenance and procedures of several databases related to the namespaces and numerical spaces of the Internet, ensuring the network's stable and secure operation.

ICANN's creation was announced publicly on September 17, 1998,and it formally came into being on September 30, 1998, incorporated in the US state of California.
