Terrorist blast in Kabul aimed at sowing sectarian discord: Iran

Press TV - Iran has denounced a "heinous" terrorist attack on a religious celebration in Afghanistan's capital of Kabul, saying it is aimedatsowing sectarian discord in the country.

"The hidden hands behind this unfair terrorist operation have no goal but to fuel ethnic, sectarian and religious strife," Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Tuesday.

He expressed hope that the Afghan people would maintain their unity, support the central government and use their past experience in the fight against terrorism to "wisely and patiently" overcome the ongoing situation witnessing increasing acts of terror and brutal violence in the country.

The Iranian spokesperson also hoped that the Afghans would take firm steps to establish and stabilize peace and sustainable security in Afghanistan and reiterated Iran's full support in this regard.

More than 50 people were killed and over 80 wounded after a huge explosion ripped through a building in Kabul in which a large crowd of people, including religious scholars, were marking the birthday anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him).

The deadly attack was carried out at the Uranus Wedding Hall on the airport road in the city center of Kabul at about 06:15 p.m. local time on Tuesday.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, but it bears the hallmark of attacks carried out by the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group, which has taken advantage of the chaos in Afghanistan and established a foothold in the war-torn countrys eastern and northern regions.

Late in April, two back-to-back bomb blasts hit near government buildings in Kabul, during the morning rush hour, leaving at least 25 people dead and 49 others injured.

The first bomb attack was carried out by an assailant on a motorcycle, who blew himself up in the Shashdarak area close to the buildings of Afghanistans National Directorate of Security in the heart of Kabul, officials said.

Shortly afterwards, a second explosion tore through a group of reporters who had gathered at the site of the first incident outside the headquarters of the Ministry of Urban Development.

Daesh claimed responsibility for the blasts.
