Canada considering sanctions against Saudis over Khashoggi murder



Sputnik - Canada could soon join the United States in imposing sanctions against the Saudi nationals accused of killing journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland told reporters.




Earlier inthe day, the US Treasury Department sanctioned 17 Saudis underthe Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, including the head ofthe Saudi Consulate inIstanbul, where Khashoggi was killed onOctober 2.
"Canada welcomes the US action. When it comes toCanada, we also do have Magnitsky legislation inplace and that is a tool that we have found very useful inour foreign policy," Freeland said onThursday, asquoted byCBC News. "And that is certainly something which inthe coming days Canada is actively considering."


Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist, disappeared onOctober 2 afterentering the Saudi consulate inIstanbul. Saudi officials initially claimed Khashoggi left the consulate unharmed, only tolater admit that he was killed onthe premises. The royal family has denied any role inthe incident.

The Saudi prosecutor general's office onThursday provided the kingdom's latest version ofevents, saying ina statement that Khashoggi was killed witha drug injection and his body was dismembered and taken outof the consulate. According tothe statement, 21 people have been detained inthe Khashoggi murder case, with11 ofthem charged. Prosecutors are demanding the death penalty forfive ofthem.

On October 26, the Saudi prosecutor general acknowledged that the journalist's murder was premeditated. However, Riyadh maintains that the killing had nothing todo withthe Saudi Royal family, describing it asa rogue operation.
