Work on creation of EU mechanism to bypass US anti-Iran sanctions stepped up



Sputnik - Earlier, the United States re-imposed a second portion of sanctions against Iran, with the latest measures concerning the country's oil exports among other things.




The European Union has stepped upwork onthe creation ofa special mechanism that will facilitate trade withTehran amidUS sanctions, Maja Kocijancic, the European Commission's spokeswoman forforeign affairs and security policy, said ata press briefing onWednesday.
"The work onsetting upthe SPV, or the special purpose vehicle, is continuing, and is actually accelerated," Kocijancic said.


She specified that the mechanism would enable European exporters and importers topursue legitimate trade withIran.

The European Union regrets the banking transfers operator SWIFT's move tosuspend Iranian banks fromthe service, a European Commission representative said.
"We've noted the decision ofthe SWIFT, and we find this decision, or rather the disconnection, regrettable asit risks affecting the integrity ofthe international financial system. We asthe European Union remain committed tosupporting the Iran nuclear deal, the JCPOA, asa matter ofour own security, and will therefore continue toseek topreserve the benefits that arise fromthis agreement," Kocijancic said.


The SWIFT banking network announced onMonday it had suspended several Iranian banks fromits service inlight ofWashington's move toreimpose nuclear sanctions onTehran.

In May, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States would withdraw fromthe Iran nuclear agreement and re-impose sanctions againstTehran that were lifted underthe accord.

As the United States announced that it would withdraw fromthe deal and reinstate sanctions againstIran, other participants ofthe JCPOA, including Iran itself, China, Germany, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the European Union, reaffirmed their commitment tothe agreement.

Earlier, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and the foreign ministers ofFrance, Germany and the United Kingdom said ina joint statement that asparties tothe JCPOA, they would continue towork withRussia, China and third countries topreserve effective financial channels withIran.
