UN spokesman says Guterres to look into Irans letter against US

MNA UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Monday that the Secretary-General Antnio Guterres will respond accordingly to Irans letter urging UN to hold Washington accountable for reimposing sanctions on Tehran.

On Monday, Iran urged the United Nations to hold the United States accountable for reimposing sanctions on Tehran, deeming the measures illegal and in violation of a Security Council resolution.

Iranian Ambassador Gholamali Khoshroo said in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that the "irresponsible conduct of the United States necessitates a collective response to uphold the rule of law."

"The United Nations and its member-states, in accordance with the charter of the United Nations and the international law, should resist against these wrongful acts and hold the United States accountable for such acts," he added.

In his daily press conference on Monday, the UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that "we will take a look at the letter and respond accordingly.

He also added that the Secretary-Generals stance on the Iran nuclear deal has not changed.

Guterres has repeatedly voiced his support for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), calling on all sides to comply with their commitments under the international agreement.

The UN Security Council resolution 2231 has endoresed the Iran nuclear deal and calls on all countries to make efforts for implementing it.

On May 8, US unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA and re-imposed sanctions on Iran, which had been lifted under the agreement. The US pullout was censured by other sides to the JCPOA, as well as EU and a great number of other countries which deemed the agreement as a solid basis for facilitating Irans interactions with the world.
