JPMorgan to pay $5.26Mln to settle Cuba, Iran sanctions breach - US Treasury



Sputnik - JPMorgan Chase Bank has agreed to pay penalties of more than $5.26 million to settle over 87 violations of US sanctions, including measures imposed against Cuba and Iran, the US Treasury said Friday.



"The US Department ofthe Treasurys Office ofForeign Assets Control (OFAC) today announced a $5,263,171 settlement withJPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A., tosettle potential civil liability for87 apparent violations ofthe Cuban Assets Control Regulations the Iranian Transactions and Sanctions Regulations and the Weapons ofMass Destruction Proliferators Sanctions Regulations," the US Treasury Department's Office ofForeign Assets Control (OFAC) said ina press release onFriday.


OFAC also issued a "Finding ofViolation" againstthe bank inregard toviolations ofthe Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Sanctions Regulations and the Syrian Sanctions Regulations, the release added.

The violations included 85 transactions ofmore than $46 million, aswell aseight accounts onbehalf ofsix customers who were onthe list ofSpecially Designated Nationals.

All ofthe violations inboth ofthese situations were voluntarily self-disclosed byJPMorgan Chase, according tothe release.

Earlier inthe year, US President Donald Trump imposed mass steel and aluminum tariffs which resulted inthe renegotiation oftrade deals withthe country's traditional partners. Another attempt toreconsider the already existing deal was Washington's withdrawal fromthe JCPOA, afterwhich Trump repeatedly stated that he was ready torenegotiate a tougher deal withIran inexchange forsanctions relief. Tehran has, however, ruled outthis possibility.

The US has also reconsidered its relations withCuba, which led toTrump's announcement ofa U-turn inthe US policy towardCuba, opting toretain the embargo onthe Caribbean nation.
