With less than a week to go before the 11th presidential poll in the Islamic Republic of Iran, election officials have held a conference to discuss the rules and regulations governing the polling stations in the capital, Tehran, reportsPress TV.Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the event, Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar highlighted his ministrys key role in monitoring the election.
The Interior Ministry is obligated to have an important role in observing the presidential election, he said.
This is the 11th presidential election and the 4th city and rural council elections. There are over 50 million eligible voters, over 1.5 million first-time voters in this years presidential election. There are over 60,000 polling stations in Iran, and 285 polling stations for Iranians living outside the country, the interior minister added.
Some 200 thousand election officials will monitor the polling stations throughout the country, 6000 of whom have been designated to polling centers in Tehran, say election administrators.
Tehrans Governor Morteza Tamadon also said some 6000 voting centers will be set up in Tehran with around 12000 ballot boxes.
As the countdown to the upcoming election has begun, the eight candidates running in the race have stepped up their campaigns, canvassing for votes. Theyre allowed to campaign until 24 hours before polls open.
Iranians go to the polls on June 14th to elect their next president. The 4th city and rural council elections are also scheduled to be held on the same day.
