US court: Iran must pay $6bn in damages to victims of 9/11 attacks

IRNA - A US judge has ruled that Iran must pay over $6b in compensation to the victims of 9/11 terror attacks in the United States, aljazeera website reported Tuesday.

George Daniels, the judge of the Southern District Court of New York issues the judgment in absentia Monday.

A US fact finding commission formed after the September 11, 2001 terror attack reached to a conclusion that Iran had not played any role in the incident.

Daniels in his latest judgment accused the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps and Central Bank of Iran of being involved in the terror attacks and required Iran to pay 4-12 million dollars to each family member of the victims.

Daniels issued similar judgment against the Islamic Republic of Iran in 2011 and 2016, requiring it to pay billions of dollars in compensation.

On September 11, 2001, 19 members of Al-Qaida including 15 Saudi Arabian nationals hijacked four commercial planes and crashed them into various targets inside the United States including the twin towers of the World Trade Center, killing around 30,000 people.
