UN chief urges member states to avoid escalation of situation in Syria



Sputnik - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a statement called on the member states of the Security Council to come to an agreement on establishing a mechanism for holding accountable those who use chemical weapons.




"Any use ofchemical weapons is abhorrent. The suffering it causes is horrendous. I have repeatedly expressed my deep disappointment that the Security Council failed toagree ona dedicated mechanism foreffective accountability forthe use ofchemical weapons inSyria," Guterres said onFriday afterthe US, France, and the UK attacked the Syrian government. "I urge the Security Council toassume its responsibilities and fill this gap. I will continue toengage withMember States tohelp achieve this objective."

He also called onall countries ofthe Security Council toavoid any actions that could worsen the situation inSyria.

"I call onthe members ofthe Security Council tounite and exercise that responsibility," Guterres said. "I urge all Member States toshow restraint inthese dangerous circumstances and toavoid any acts that could escalate the situation and worsen the suffering ofthe Syrian people."

Guterres said that the Security Councils main responsibility is tokeep international peace and security.
"I have been followingclosely the reports ofair strikes inSyria conducted bythe United States, France and the United Kingdom. Theres an obligation, particularly when dealing withmatters ofpeace and security, toact consistently withthe Charter ofthe United Nations and withinternational law ingeneral," Guterres said. "The UN Charter is very clear onthese issues. The Security Council has primary responsibility forthe maintenance ofinternational peace and security."
