Spanish FM in Tehran for meeting senior Iranian officials

February 24, The Iran Project - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain Alfonso Mara Dastis Quecedo arrived in Tehran on Tuesday (Feb. 20) to hold talks with senior Iranian officials.

The Spanish FM's Iran trip features talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, Secretary of Irans Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani , President Hassan Rouhani and Leaders Senior Advisor in the International Affairs Ali-Akbar Velayati.

Talking to Zarif, the Spanish FM said that Spain completely backs landmark Iran nuclear deal signed with G5+1.

During the meeting, Zarif stressed the significance of developing Tehran-Madrid relations in all arenas.

Meanwhile, two memorandums of understanding on political and economic cooperation were signed by the Iranian and Spanish foreign ministers.

Speaking to Spanish FM, Shamkhani criticized the European Union's inaction on the US negative actions against the nuclear deal reached between Iran and world powers in 2015.

Meanwhile, Dastis said the European countries' approach, in particular after the nuclear deal with Iran, is development of joint cooperation as well as development of investment in the infrastructural sectors to reach strong and long term economic relations with Iran.

In a meeting with Spanish FM, Iranian president highlighted efforts to develop bilateral relations, saying deepening bilateral relations is in the interest of both nations.

The Spanish foreign minister, for his part, described Iran as a powerful and influential country in the region, and hoped that the development of cooperation and consultations between Tehran and Madrid would lead to the development and strengthening of stability, prosperity and security for the people of the region.

Talking to Spanish minister, Velayati warned the Europeans that worsening situation in the Middle East can worsen the conditions for the European countries as well.

Dastis also asserted that he was visiting Tehran with the intention to broaden friendly ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran and voiced hope that dialogues bring more peace in the region and the world.
