Sputnik- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday described the ongoing trial in the United States of deputy CEO of Turkey's Halkbank Hakan Atilla as part of the attempt to stage a new coup in Turkey.




On January 4, acting US Attorney Joon Kim said that a jury unanimously convicted Atilla ofa scheme tosend billions ofdollars toIran inviolation ofUS sanctions againstthe country. Following the ruling, Ankara said the decision toconvict the banker was unlawful.

"Those who failed tocarry outa coup inour country onJuly 15 [2016] are now trying tofind other ways todo it. The well-known process onthe case ofAtilla, which is now ongoing inthe United States, is the address ofthe political component ofthe coup attempt," Erdogan said while addressing the parliamentary group ofTurkey's ruling party.

In March 2017, US authorities detained Atilla onsuspicion ofa secret deal aimed atsending money toIran inviolation ofanti-Tehran sanctions. The criminal proceeding againstthe banker were based onthe testimony ofReza Zarrab, a dual citizen ofTurkey and Iran, who was arrested inthe United States inMarch 2016 onsuspicion ofviolating these sanctions and pledged guilty inNovember. He cooperated withthe US prosecutors, testified againstAtilla aswell asErdogan, saying that he could have been aware ofthe deal.

On July 15, 2016, a military takeover attempt took place inTurkey, leaving over240 people killed. Ankara accused Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, who has been living inthe United States since1999, and his followers oforchestrating the attempt. Gulen has refuted the allegations.
