Iranian navy commander says Tehran plans to send ships to Atlantic



Sputnik - Iran plans to send ships to western Atlantic Ocean in the near future, Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said.




According toTasnim news agency, the move is aimed tohighlight the Iranian navy's "powerful presence ininternational waters."

The Iranian military also refuted mainstream media reports portraying the Islamic republic's Naval Forces as "weak."

[In a program aired] onCNN, they (Americans) [] said Iran byno means is capable ofentering the ocean and passing throughit, butwe arrived inthe Atlantic, and we will go tothe west ofthe ocean inthe nearfuture, Tasnimquotedthe Rear Admiral Sayyari bysaying.

In recent years, the Iranian fleet increased its presence ininternational waters tosecure naval routes and protect ships and oil tankers frompirates.

Last November, Sayyari spoke aboutIran's plans tosend ships tothe Atlantic Ocean forthe first time; the 44 flotilla ofthe Iranian Naval Forces entered the Atlantic Ocean aftervisiting one ofthe ports inSouth Africa.

Coincidence or not, the statement came aftera number ofincidents involving the US navy and Iranian shipsinthe Arabian Gulf.
