Erdogan expects setting up safe zone in Idlib after talks with Russia, Iran



Sputnik - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday said he expects that the issue of setting up the fourth and final Syrian de-escalation zone in Idlib will be successfully resolved during talks with Russia and Iran.




ANKARA (Sputnik) On August 6, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that work onsetting upthe fourth Syrian de-escalation zone inthe province ofIdlib is underway, however,certain difficulties remain.
"As forthe situation withIdlib, negotiations continue, our intelligence has close contacts withRussia and withIran. Concerning Idlib, the talks were positive, and I think that withinthe framework ofthe constantly negotiated negotiations withMoscow and withTehran, we will be able toquickly come toa solution tothis situation," Erdogan told reporters.


The agreement onestablishingfour Syrian safe zoneswas reached duringthe talks onSyrian reconciliation inAstana inMay. On August 3, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said the representatives ofthe Russian Defense Ministry and moderate Syrian opposition reached an agreement duringtheir meeting inCairo onJuly 31 onthe third de-escalation zone inSyria, north ofHoms.

Prior tothat, agreement was reached ontwo de-escalation zones inthe rebel-controlled south alongthe border withJordan and inEastern Ghouta. The functioning ofthe remaining fourth zone is yet tobe agreed withSyrian opposition.

The ceasefire regime withinthe zones is expected tofacilitate access ofhumanitarian missions tothe regions, create conditions forthe restoration ofinfrastructure inthe conflict-torn areas and encourage refugees and internally displaced people toreturn totheir homes.

The ceasefire inSyrian de-escalation zones does not cover the militants ofthe Jabhat Fatah al Sham, formerly known asNusra Front, and Daesh terrorist groups.

Last Saturday, a member ofSyria's Tomorrow opposition movementtold Sputnikthat the efforts ofRussia and Egypt will possibly make Syria's northwestern Idlib province the next stage ofde-escalation inthe country afterthe province ofHoms.
