Israel, US, Russia reported to have held secret talks on Syrian ceasefire



Sputnik - Israel, Russia and the United States held several rounds of secret talks to discuss the ceasefire in southern Syria and creation of de-escalation zones on the country's borders with Israel and Jordan, the Haaretz newspaper reported Wednesday, citing Israeli and European politicians.




MOSCOW (Sputnik) According tothe news outlet, the meetings were held inthe Jordanian capital ofAmman and one ofthe European capitals beforethe Russia-US agreement onSyrian ceasefire was announced onJuly 7. The Israeli side reportedly objected tothe deal due tothe fact the Moscow and Washington did not focus their attention onthe withdrawal ofIranian forces fromSyria.

The unnamed sources told the newspaper that the talks engaged leading diplomats, defense and security officials fromthe three countries. The Israeli side reportedly included representatives fromthe country's Foreign Ministry, the Defense Ministry and intelligence community. The US team was comprised ofUS Special Envoy forSyria Michael Ratney, Special Presidential Envoy forthe Global Coalition toCounter ISIS (Daesh, a terrorist group banned inRussia) Brett McGurk. The Russian delegation was represented bySpecial Presidential Envoy forSyria Alexander Lavrentyev, the newspaper said.

Amman reportedly hosted two meetings onone day: the first was betweenIsrael, Russia and the United States, and the second was betweenIsrael, Jordan and the United States.
Several days later another meeting was held inan undisclosed European city. The main dispute was overthe fact that the ceasefire was considered byRussia and the United States tobe a tool forstabilizing the situation and enhancing the fight againstDaesh.Israel, onthe other hand, stressed the need todiscuss Iranian presence onSyrian territory, specifically the withdrawal ofIran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), Lebanons Hezbollah movement and Shiite militias, according tothe newspaper.


The memorandum onthe establishment ofde-escalation zone inthe Daraa, Quneitra and As-Suwayda provinces insouthwestern Syria, agreed uponby Russia, Jordan and the United States, took effect onJuly 9. Since then, Russian military police have set upnew checkpoints and observation posts throughoutthe safe zone toensure that hostilities do not resume.

Syria has been inthe state ofcivil war forsix years, withgovernment forces fighting againstboth Syrian opposition groups who strive tooverthrow President Bashar Assad, and numerous extremist and terrorist groups such asDaesh.
