Qatar diplomatic row could affect Astana talks - Syrian opposition member

Sputnik - The progress of the Astana talks on the Syrian settlement may be threatened by states cutting off diplomatic relations with Qatar, depending on Turkey and Iran's involvement in this diplomatic standoff, Tarek Ahmad, a member of the Damascus Platform opposition group and a member of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), told Sputnik on Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) On June 5, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates severed diplomatic relations withQatar. The states accused Qatar ofsupporting terrorist groups, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist movement, aswell asof interfering inother countries' domestic affairs. Libya made a similar decision. Yemen cut diplomatic relations citing Doha's links withHouthis. The Maldives took the same step, citing extremism and terrorism concerns.
"I believe, it can affect next Astana rounds. Astana is supported by3 countries such asRussia, Iran and Turkey. Turkey and Iran are likely tosupport Qatar inthis dispute and we could see that further developments may complicate the situation aroundSyria, when Iran and Turkey find themselves againstEgypt and Saudi Arabia," Ahmad said.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said earlier inthe day that Ankara was "saddened" bythe situation and urged fordialogue despitethe existing disagreements.
"It is inthe interest ofTurkey and Iran toachieve results beforethe chances ofAstana process are undermined bythe regional confrontation," Ahmad said.

Four rounds of negotiations onthe Syrian conflict were held inthe Kazakh capital city, Astana, onJanuary 23-24, February 15-16, March 14-15 and May 3-4. During the latest round, the guarantor countries ofa nationwide Syrian ceasefire regime Russia, Iran, and Turkey agreed toestablish four safety zones acrossthe country.
