Kazakhstan urges US to attend May Astana talks on Syria as observer

Sputnik - Kazakhstan called on the United States to participate as an observer in the next round of Astana talks on settlement of the Syrian conflict, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.


ASTANA (Sputnik) On Friday, Kazakh Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov held a meeting withhis US counterpart Rex Tillerson inNew York City and discussed a number ofbilateral and international issues.


"As forthe Astana process, the Kazakh side has highly recommended the US representatives tocontinue its support ofthis track ofintra-Syria settlement related tothe ceasefire regime and actively participate asan observer [in the Astana format talks]," the statement said.


Moreover, Kazakhstan stresses the necessity tocontinue the negotiations onthe settlement ofthe Syrian conflict withinthe framework ofthe Astana format, the country's Foreign Ministry said ina statement ofSunday.

On Friday, Kazakh Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov held a meeting withhis UK counterpart Boris Johnson onthe sidelines ofthe UN Security Council.
"Abdrakhmanov informed the interlocutor withthe progress ofthe Astana process, stressing the need tocontinue it. [Abdrakhmanov's] UK counterpart supported the efforts ofKazakhstan, stressing the interest infurther settlement ofthe Syrian crisis," the statement said.


On Wednesday and Thursday, Kazakhstan's capital is expected tohost the fourth roundof talks betweenDamascus and the Syrian opposition. The Asian city has already hosted three rounds oftalks brokered byRussia, Turkey and Iran, held onJanuary 23-24, February 15-16 and March 14-15. Washington has participated asan observer inthe previous rounds ofAstana talks.
