'Support under any circumstances': Iran backs Russia in fight against terror

Iran remains in full support of Russia's anti-terror operation in Syria, Tehran's former ambassador to Syria Hossein Sheikholeslam told Sputnik Persian.

Russia launched its aerial anti-terror operation inSyria a year ago, operating incooperation withthe Syrian army onthe ground atthe invitation ofthe Syrian government.

Although most Russian forces left the country onMarch 14, a small contingent remains atthe Hmeimim Air Base inSyria, and Russian Aerospace Forces continue tocarry outairstrike againstterrorist groups operating inSyria. On September 9, Russia and the US agreed ona ceasefire deal, however ten days later the Syrian army declared the ceasefire overbecause militant opposition groups, many ofwhich have links tothe terrorist group Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, consistently broke the truce.

On Sunday the UN Security Council held an extraordinary meeting, initiated bythe United States, France and the UK, toaddress the rise inviolence inAleppo, Syria. Western diplomats criticized Russia and Iran duringthe meeting, claiming that support forDamascus fromMoscow and Tehran is prolonging the war inSyria.

Hossein Sheikholeslam, former advisor atthe Iranian Foreign Ministry and Iran's ambassador toSyria between1998 and 2003, told Sputnik Persian that Iran remains insupport ofRussia's anti-terror operation, and continues toback the Syrian government inits fight againstterrorism. "It should be noted that Iran, Russia and the Syrian government advocated a peace settlement and the ceasefire, foran end tokilling and bloodshed. I dare say that the initiative forthe truce belongs toour alliance," Sheikholeslam said.

"Sergey Lavrov has said that it isn't worth waiting forthe Western coalitionto decide ona peace deal, that we should be decisive and persuade the Syrian government toagree toa peace deal. However, unfortunately, the terrorists won't allow the establishment ofa truce."

Sheikholeslam said that Russia's aerial anti-terror operation was a key turning point inthe fight. "We all know that the Syrian army's aerial equipment is old and wouldn't be able tocarry outso many precise airstrikes. Russian aviation has provided support fromthe air, clearing the way forthe government ground troops and the Syrian resistance."

"The Russian air operation was an undoubted success, particularly given that the Americans provided support tothe terrorists, and advocated a no-fly zone infear oflosing their air corridor. It is clear that the US initiative tocreate a no-fly zone is aimed againstthe Russian Aerospace Forces and the Syrian Air Force, and not their coalition aircraft."

Sheikholeslam said that Iran's decision toallow Russia touse its air base duringthe course ofcarrying outanti-terror operations is testament toTehran's resolute opposition toterrorism. "Iran has approved and welcomed the participation ofthe Russian Aerospace Forces inthe anti-terror operation inSyria sincethe beginning.

We offered the Russian air force our technical assistance forcarrying outflights, and welcomed the initiative toturn the Hmeimim base intoa permanent Russian base." "No NATO members have provided their military airports forthe Russian Aerospace Forces tocarry outthe anti-terror operation, and Iran did (the Hamadan base). After all, we have one aim the fight againstterrorism. That's why we will show support and help Russia underany circumstances," Sheikholeslam said.
