Cadet wrestlers win medals in World C’ships

TEHRAN, Sep. 14 (MNA) – Three Iranian Greco-Roman wrestlers have so far claimed three medals, including one gold, in the 2016 Cadet World Championships underway in Georgia.


The sportive event kicked off on Tuesday September 13 in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi where Iranian athletes snatched one gold and two silver medals.

Competing in 63kg weight group, Iran’s Yousef Hosseinvand defeated Sergei Stepanov of Russia 10-4 in the final showdown in order to win the title.

Hosseinvand had quelled the Portuguese wrestler Daniel Joao De Matos Oliveira De Morais Ca 3-0 in the qualification round before subduing Italy’s Ignazio Sanfilippo 3-1 in the second round. He later defeated Hrachya Poghosyan of Armenia 2-1 as well as Japan’s Ryoma Anraku 3-2 on road to the finals.

Mohammadreza Mokhtari also succeeded in securing a silver medal at 58kg weight division after conceded a 1-5 defeat against Valentin Petic of Moldova in the final encounter. He had made a swift advancement to the last round by thrashing Kazakh, Turkish and American rivals.

Iran’s other silver medalist was Vahid Dadkhah who failed to down the Polish Greco-Roman wrestler Gerard Cyprian Kurniczak in the fight over gold medal. He had previously overwhelmed athletes from Ukraine, Turkey, Japan before reaching the finals.

However, Pouya Dadmarz (50kg) and Reza Mardi (54kg) of Iran finished fifth and eleventh and failed to claim medals in the 2016 World Championships.

Competitions for the remaining weight categories are slated to take place today in New Sports Palace of Tbilisi.
