Support for terrorists in Mideast must end: Rouhani



Iran'sPresident Hassan Rouhani has warned againstthe big threatposed byterrorism toall countries in the Middle East and across the world, stressing that support for terrorist groups must end in order to restoreregional stability.

Regional stability depends on ending support for terrorism. The eradicationof terrorism, restoration of stability and security to the region, repatriationof refugees to their homes and enforcementof the peoples will and voteare among the important and common goals [ofIran and France] on regional issues, Rouhani said in a meeting with President of French National Assembly Claude Bartolone in Tehran on Tuesday.

Stressingthe importance of improving cooperation between Iran and France on regional issues, particularly the fight against terrorism, Rouhani said, The expansion of cooperation and joint consultations between the two countries can help settle regional problems and issues.

As a major victim of terrorism, the Islamic Republic is aware of the dangers of the ominous phenomenon of terrorism while France is also now cognizant of this important issue following the recent terrorist attacks in the country, Rouhani said.
Undoubtedly, terrorism is currently posing a big threat toall countries in the region and the world and in addition to a coordinated fight, we should make efforts in the cultural sectorto prevent young people from falling into the traplaid byterrorist groups, the Iranian president added.
He further expressed concernover the destruction of infrastructurein the Middle Eastern countries, particularly Syria, and the killing of innocent people, saying that terrorists are selling Syria and Iraq's antiques and oil to other countries while everyoneknows which countries are assisting them from inside and outside the region and which countries are supplying terrorists with weapons and armaments.

Rouhani noted that Iran is helpingSyria and Iraq fight against terrorism upon the requestofthe two countries governments, adding, The Islamic Republic of Iran still believes that dialogue and the pursuit of political approaches are the right path to solve problems in Syria.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimates that over 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

Full implementation of Tehran-Paris accords a necessity

The Iranian president further urged Tehran and Paris to fully and swiftly implement agreements reached between the two sides during his visit to France in January following the implementation of a nuclear agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.

Rouhani said the implementation of the mutualdocuments would lead to a tangible change in bilateral relations in such areas aspolitics, economy, culture and science.

Iran and France signed a series of basic trade deals estimated to be worth billions of dollars on January 28during the historic visit to Paris by the Iranian president.

France pledges to fully implement agreements

The top French parliamentarian, for his part, said Iran and France should make efforts to fully implement all agreements they have previously reached.

He added that his country supports bids by big French banks to cooperate with and invest in Iran.

Bartolone said Iran plays a leading role in reinforcing stability and security in the region and added that Tehran and Paris have common views on many regional and international issues and can cooperate to solve problems.

He also emphasized that the campaign against terrorism requires the collective effortand resolve of all countries.
