Researchers improve efficiency of cancer heat therapy

TEHRAN, Jul. 20 (MNA) Iranian researchers have improved the efficiency of cancer heat therapy process known as hyperthermia by laboratorial and analytical simulating of the process at the same time.

Heating cancer tissues is one wayto eliminate cancer tumors.Hyperthermia generally means an increase in the body temperature that is higher than normal. High temperature of body usually results in a sickness such as fever or thermal shock. However, carefully controlled hyperthermia is sometimes used in the treatment of illnesses, specially cancers.

According to Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council (INIC), the most important objective of this research was to accurately determine optimum parameters of the heating process to cure cancer tumors by using super paramagnetic nanoparticles. Hyperthermia process has been studied in this research both in laboratorial scale and through solving equations and programming.

This research studied and simulated heat therapy process in a precise manner. It also determined the exact dosage of nanoparticles, time and intensity of magnetic field to eliminate cancer tumor at given dimensions. Iron-based super paramagnetic nanoparticles with average diameter of 20nm have been used in the heat therapy process. The process was simulated on a dead animal tissue, and a stream of artificial blood circulation was used to make the behavior of the dead tissue close to that of a living tissue.

In addition, thermal profile was analyzed and studied in order to eliminate a tumor at a radius of 3 cm by using computer simulation and by solving mathematical equations for the tissues.

Results of the research have been published in Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology, vol. 30, issue 3, 2016, pp. 1459-1469.
