Tehran, Jan 6, IRNA - Recent attacks against Saudi diplomatic missions in Tehran and Mashhad is suspicious, Police Chief Brigadier General Hossein Ashtari said on Wednesday.

Speaking in a local ceremony, the police chief said that he is not sure but suspicious of the way Saudi missions were attacked.

Police will continue its investigation to find the realities revealed behind the attacks, he added.

Holding protest meetings against Saudi Arabia is acceptable but no person who is loyal to the Islamic Republic invades an embassy in this way, the commander said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he called Saudi crimes against Yemen people, execution of Shia Cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr and the Saudi mismanagement of this Year's Hajj pilgrimage which resulted Mina catastrophe as unacceptable.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, in a letter to Iran's Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli-Larijani, called for punishment of those who attacked Saudi Embassy and Consulate in Tehran and Mashad.

'Those behind this clear offence should be punished in order to prevent such actions to happen again in the future,' he added.

An outraged group of people stormed the Saudi diplomatic missions in Tehran and Mashad late Saturday after the Saudi regime executed prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr for alleged terror offenses.

Sheikh al-Nimr was an outspoken critic of the Saudi monarchy. He rose to prominence during the 2011 anti-government protests in the Saudi kingdom, where the Shia population says it is being discriminated against.
