UN resolution on Syria to be reached on Friday - Russian Foreign Ministry

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennadiy Gatilov said that a UN Security Council resolution on the Syria reconciliation process should be agreed on later on Friday.

A UN Security Council resolution onthe Syria reconciliation process should be agreed onlater onFriday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennadiy Gatilov told reporters.

"Yes, it will be," Gatilov said when asked if a resolution will be reached onFriday.

Drafted bythe five permanent members ofthe Security Council, the resolution is expected toadopt the draft later onFriday inhopes ofbringing an end toSyria's five-year civil war. It reportedly includes preperations fora ceasefire monitoring mechanism within1 month ofthe resolution's adoption.

The resolution also contains previously agreed uponterms fora transitional government, withelections tobe held underUN supervision, according toRIA Novosti.

Talks withthe Syrian opposition will be held inearly January.
"There is a common wish that the meeting should take place sometime inearly January," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, according toRIA Novosti. "At least, such a dateline was generally suggested."


US Ambassador tothe UN Samantha Power is currently phoning the remaining members ofthe 15-nation body todiscuss the details, according toReuters. A final vote is scheduled for4 PM, local time.

Lavrov said he expects the draft torespect the Syrian peoples' right todecide the future oftheir country.

Lavrov also said that there is a desire that a meeting ofthe Syrian opposition and a delegation ofthe Syrian authorities will take place inearly January, according toRIA Novosti.

There had been doubt earlier that an agreement would be reached.

"I'm not sure it's going tohappen because there are some unfortunately deliberate, or not deliberate, attempts toundercut the Vienna documents and we don't want tosee that," Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters onThursday.

Talks held inRiyadh betweenSyrian opposition groups were also a cause forconcern, withsome questioning the legitimacy ofthe meeting and raising the possibility that more radical elements ofthe opposition may have infiltrated the discussions.
