Zarif vows Iran's continued support for Iraq's war on ISIL

Zarif vows Iran
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif underlined that there has been no change in Tehran's policy of continued support for the Iraqi government and nation in their ongoing fight against terrorism.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran lays emphasis on unity, maintaining solidarity and territorial integrity of its neighbor, Iraq, and any solution (to the problems of that country) should reinforce unity, security and stability of Iraq and the region," Zarif said in a meeting with UN Special Envoy for Iraq Yan Kubish in Tehran on Sunday.

The Iranian foreign minister appreciated the UN's efforts in Iraq, and reiterated the need for the international community to render support to the Iraqi government's confrontation against terrorism, reminding that the conditions of the Arab country has direct impact on regional stability and security.

Zarif criticized the Western countries' support for the ISIL and other terrorists groups in Iraq, Syria and Yemen, and said, "Fighting against the Takfiri terrorist groups in the region is very important and the international community should bring to a halt direct and indirect supports for these groups."

He underlined the importance of the UN's role in attracting the attention of its member-states to Iraq's conditions, and thanked the Iraqi religious and political leaders, including Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds, for their crucial role in Iraq's national solidarity.

The Iranian foreign minister, meantime, slammed the US-led anti-ISIL coalition for its poor performance in fighting the ISIL.

Kubish, for his part, pointed to the political, security and economic conditions of Iraq, and said that the key to ending the current situation in Iraq is national unity.

Earlier today, Iranian Supreme Leader's top adviser for international affairs Ali Akbar Velayati underlined that Washington's plans for the disintegration of Iraq are doomed to failure.

"The US plot to disintegrate Iraq will not be materialized," Velayati said in a meeting with Kubish in Tehran on Sunday.

He reiterated that Iraq is a very important country in all areas and the people of Iraq are a real nation who deserve the best living conditions, and said, "We welcome any international action under the auspices of the UN to restore peace, security and stability to Iraq."

Velayati pointed to the plots underway to divide Iraq into different sections, and said, "Unfortunately, some countries, including the US, are after the disintegration of Iraq and they suppose that if this is materialized all problems of Iraq will be resolved, but it should be noted that the Iraqi nation is united and its Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish population will not allow the US plot to dividing Iraq to come true."

He also referred to the Iran-Iraq friendly relations, and said, "The two countries' relations are expanding and the process of reform in Iraq should be followed up, otherwise problems will arise."
