Tehran, Aug 27, IRNA - A relatively strong quake measuring 4.2 degrees on the Richter scale jolted the vicinity of Suza region in the southern province of Hormuzgan early Thursday.

The tremor struck the town in the Persian Gulf Island of Qeshm at 04:54 pm local time (0024 GMT) on Thursday. There were no immediate reports of any casualties or material damage.

According to the seismological unit of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the quake was felt at 26.56 degrees latitude and 55.89 degrees longitude. The epicenter of the quake was registered at the depth of 10 kilometers.

Iran is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, being crossed by several major faultiness that cover at least 90% of the country. As a result, earthquakes in Iran occur often and are destructive.

The Iranian plateau is subject to most types of tectonic activity, including active folding, faulting and volcanic eruptions.

It is well known for its long history of disastrous earthquakes. Earthquakes killed thousands, and destroyed valuable natural resources.

Since 1900, at least 126,000 fatalities have resulted from earthquakes in Iran.
