US officials to visit Israel for action countering Iran Middle East policy

A high-level US delegation will travel to Israel in September to discuss halting Tehran's alleged support for Lebanese and Palestinian militants, the Haaretz newspaper reported Tuesday, citing a senior US administration official.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) The announcement follows Irans nuclear agreement withworld powers that was successfully reached inJuly. The deal stipulates easing the sanctions againstthe country, and the expected rehabilitation ofTehran's economy.

According tothe official, the US delegation, headed byActing Under Secretary forTerrorism and Financial Intelligence Adam Szubin, will invest more effort intracking the funds received fromfuture lifting ofsanctions, asWashington fears they will be transferred toIrans armed forces.

"The Iranians will continue togive money toHezbollah. We need tocooperate onhow the money flows and try tostop it. There is a feeling that we need tointensify what we are doing together. We need topivot fromfocusing onthe nuclear deal toall the other things Iran is doing, likefunding terror organizations," the US administration official said, quoted byHaaretz.

In 1984, the United States designated Iran asa state sponsor ofterrorism. The US State Department accused Tehran ofusing proxy militant groups toadvance its foreign policy goals inthe Middle East, and also ofsupporting militant groups inthe region, likeLebanon-based Hezbollah and Palestinian Hamas inthe Gaza Strip.

In April, Russian presidential envoy toAfghanistan Zamir Kabulov said Moscow did not share the US view that Iran was supporting terrorism.

On July 14, Iran and the P5+1 group, comprising China, France, Russia, the United States, Britain and Germany, reached an agreement toensure the peaceful nature ofTehran's nuclear program and ease sanctions againstthe country.
