Dy FM advises democratic means to resolve Syrian crisis

Tehran, July 22, IRNA - Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on Wednesday that any change in Syria should be made through democratic means and the people should exercise the right to determine their own fate.

Abdollahian made the remarks in a meeting with visiting UN representative on Syria Staffan de Mistura.

Referring to the crystal clear stands adopted by the Islamic Republic of Iran in backing Syrian government and nation, he said all parties knew that the only way to resolve Syrian crisis is political means and even those who armed Syrian opposition need political settlement.

Appreciating the efforts made by UN representative for Syria, he said that Iran believes that changes are vital for the country opposing disarray and any idea to drive Syria administration to chaos.

Terrorists groups under different names are fighting against Syria; he said adding that the Islamic Republic of Iran is to help Syria and other countries subject to terrorism.

UN representative to Syria, for his part, said that militarism is useless to resolve the Syrian crisis calling for taking serious action to put an end to the country's crisis through diplomatic means.

To resolve the issue, it requires to maintain territorial integrity of Syria, pullout of foreign forces from Syria and respect for all ethnic groups and tribes, he said.

Referring to good results of talks in Geneva for Syrian crisis, he said the role of all governments which play effective role in Syria such as the Islamic Republic of Iran is of prime importance.
