US opposes sale of Russian anti-ballistic missile system to Iran

US State Department spokesperson said that the United States is opposed to Russia selling the Antey-2500 anti-ballistic missile system to Iran following reports that Russia is considering providing Tehran with the advanced system.


WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The United States is opposed toRussia selling the Antey-2500 anti-ballistic missile system toIran followingreports that Russia is considering providing Tehran withthe advanced system, US State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said onMonday.

Weve seen these reports and once we have more details we will certainly raise this atthe appropriate levels, Psaki said ata press briefing.

Moscow reportedly previously cancelled a 2010 agreement tosell the S-300 surface-to-air weapons system toTeheran.

If reports are true that Russia has decided not tosell the S-300 system toIran we would certainly welcome that, butwe would have similar objections tothe Antey-2500 system, Psaki said.Iran is considering the purchase ofthe Antey-2500 system, said Sergei Chemezov, the head ofRussian state defense and technology conglomerate Rostec ata weapons expo inthe United Arab Emirates onMonday.

The more advanced Antey-2500 anti-ballistic missile system is capable ofshooting downshort and medium range ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and aircraft.

Chemezov is onthe list ofpersons covered bythe US sanctions againstRussia.
