TEHRAN (Tasnim) Irans Foreign Ministry strongly condemned a Friday terrorist attack on a Shiite mosque in Pakistans Peshawar that killed at least 19 people.

Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham said on Saturday that Iran condemns terrorist attacks targeting the innocent people of Pakistan, regardless of their religion or ethnicity.

Expressing sympathy with the bereaved families of victims, Afkham said such acts of terror run counter to the teachings of Islam and the human values.

The Friday attack on the Imamia mosque in Peshawar killed at least 19 people and injured more than 50 others.

The gunmen who attacked the mosque were wearing uniforms of security forces, according to officials.

Senior police official Rana Umer Hayat said several gunmen threw grenades before storming the mosque in the main city in Pakistan's restive northwest, around the time of Friday prayers.

Targeted killings against Shiite Muslims in Pakistan have drawn international outrage, with rights groups and regional countries expressing concern over the growing deadly violence.

Shiites are seen as a minority group in Pakistan. They make up about a fifth of the country's population of over 180 million.
