Iran sees US 'insincere' in fight against terrorism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) The Iranian deputy foreign minister said Tehran believes that the US is insincere in its fight against terrorist groups despite Washington requests for Iran's assistance in confronting terrorists.

The US has asked for Iran's asssistance in the fight against terrorist groups, however, we believe the US lacks sincerity (in the fight against terrorism) as, at the same time, some of these terrorist groups are supported by the US, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for African and Middle Eastern Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said in a speech in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa on Tuesday.

The Iranian diplomat, however, refused to provide further details about the US request.

Referring to foreign military intervention in the region in recent years, the Iranian official underlined that the using military approach will not resolve the issue of terrorism and instability, and may further deteriorate the situation.

Amir Abdollahian also slammed US policies on the Syrian crisis, and emphasized that the presence of terrorist groups in Syria is the outcome of the wrong policies adopted by Washington and its allies.

The US said on September 5, 2014 that it had created a "core coalition" to battle the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group in Iraq, calling for broad support from allies and partners around the world.

But regional analysts have deplored the performance of the US-led coalition against the ISIL in Iraq, saying that its attacks on the ISIL terrorists were not effective at all.
