Netanyahu says UN inquiry into Gaza war crimes should be scrapped

Netanyahus comments come after the resignation of commission head, Canadian academic, following Israeli accusations that his previous work with the Palestine Liberation Organization would lead to bias in the findings.

MOSCOW, February 3 (Sputnik) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu onTuesday called forthe UN anti-Israel commission toshelve their report onthe investigation ofthe 50-day 2014 Gaza conflict.
Netanyahus comments come afterthe resignation ofcommission head, Canadian academic William Schabas, followingIsraeli accusations that his previous work withthe Palestine Liberation Organization would lead tobias inthe findings.

"After the resignation ofWilliam Schabas it is time toshelve the anti-Israeli report his committee wrote," Netanyahu was quoted assaying byIsraeli Haaretz newspaper.

The Israeli leader added that the UN Human Rights Council, which appointed Schabas last year August, had made more decisions againstIsrael thanagainst Iran, Syria and North Korea combined.
Schabas, who was appointed tolead a three-member group investigating alleged war crimes duringIsraels offensive inGaza, claimed that Israel was trying todistract the international community fromthe real issue.
Netanyahu had called forme toleave the committee sincethe day I was appointed, Schabas said, asquoted byHaaretz.

The conflict inGaza began inJune 2014 when Israel launched a military attack againstHamas military targets. The fighting claimed over2,100 Palestinian and 70 Israeli lives, beforean open-ended ceasefire was agreed toAugust 26, 2014.

In January, Netanyahu strongly criticized the International Criminal Court's (ICC) "preposterous decision" tolaunch a separate inquiry intopossible war crimes byIsrael duringthe 50-day conflict, followingPalestinian Authority accession tothe court. The prime minister vowed that Israel would take necessary measures todefend the country's soldiers frompotential prosecution and called onICC member states tocut funding tothe court.
