UNESCO General Director Irina Bokova (file photo)[/caption]The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has condemned the killing of three Syrian journalists in the crisis-hit countrys southern province of Daraa.
I condemn the killing of Youssef Mahmoud El-Dous, Rami Adel Al-Asmi and Salem Abdul-Rahman Khalil, the head of the UN cultural agency, Irina Bokova, said on December 15.
The journalists worked for Orient TV, a Syrian satellite television channel based in Dubai, and were killed last week after a guided missile hit their vehicle near the village of Sheikh Miskeen.
I call on all parties in the tragic conflict in Syria to respect the civilian status of journalists, she added.
On Tuesday, Reporters Without Borders called Syria the deadliest country for journalists this year, with 15 reporters losing their lives in the war-torn country.
The organization said that a total of 66 journalists have lost their lives in connection to their work so far this year, warning about the rise of what it calls barbaric attacks on correspondents.
It further said that at least 119 reporters were also kidnapped during the same period, showing a 37-percent increase from last year.
It added that violent attacks on journalists are on the rise due to conflicts in Ukraine, Libya and the Middle East.
