A relatively strong quake has hit the city of Behbahan in the southwestern Iranian province of Khuzestan. According to Iranian news agencies, the quake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted the area at 00:15 local time on Saturday (20:45 GMT Friday) with shaking felt even in Mahshahr port on the Persian Gulf coast.
The epicenter of the quake was at 30.51 degrees north latitude and 50.45 degrees east longitude near the city of Gachsaran in neighboring Kohgiluyeh-and-Boyer-Ahmad Province.
Behbahans Governor Hossein Malek Khodayi told ISNA that he had not received any report on potential damage or causalities. He described the situation in the city as normal, with utility services unaffected and being supplied to the people.
Located on seismic fault lines, Iran is prone to earthquakes and experiences at least one slight tremor every day on average.
One of the deadliest earthquake to have hit Iran in recent years struck the country on December 26, 2003, when a 6.6-magnitude temblor jolted the city of Bam and its surrounding areas in southeastern Kerman Province.
The destructive earthquake left 26,271 people dead and 30,000 injured.
