Nouri al-Maliki, Iraq’s vice president[/caption]Iraq’s former prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, is set to visit Iran for talks with senior Iranian officials.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on Saturday that Maliki, who currently serves as Iraq’s vice president, will meet with high-ranking Iranian officials during the trip on Sunday.
Maliki served as prime minister from 2006 until 2014. He is also the secretary general of the Islamic Dawa Party.
Maliki stepped down as premier on August 14, voicing support for his successor, Haider al-Abadi.
The Iraqi vice president will hold talks with Iranian officials about bilateral ties between the two countries, the current developments in Iraq and the region, as well as the fight against terrorism, Amir-Abdollahian stated.
Maliki’s trip to Iran comes a few weeks after a similar trip by Prime Minister Abadi.
During his visit to Iran, Abadi met with Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani among other officials.
In his meetings, the Iraqi premier praised Iran’s support for the Iraqi government in the fight against terrorist groups and lauded the assistance Iran has offered to the government in Baghdad and the Iraqi nation at different sensitive junctures.
Iraq has been plagued by violence committed by the ISIL Takfiri terrorists, who made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq in summer, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.
