March 23, The Iran Project - Relations between Iran and the West was associated with extensive changes during the past Iranian calendar year ended March 20, 2017 and undoubtedly the future of this relationship is also heavily influenced by changes happened during the mentioned period.

Transition of power in US

The controversial transition of power in the United States is considered as the most important issue in relations between Iran and the West.

Following the implementation of the historical nuclear deal also known the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) between Iran and world powers, it was assumed that the relations of Iran and West would be shaped based on the deal.

But the unexpected transition of power in the US and Donald Trump�s victory in the presidential election, the future of this document was shrouded in mystery.

Trump�s anti-Iran remarks and the happiness of Islamic Republic�s arch-enemy, Israel, and the Zionist regime Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu�s attempts to exploit from transition of power in the US, initially gave the impression that the document will be lost and the Americans would tear JCPOA up.

On June 14, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei warned Trump to be careful about what they say, and said that Iran will torch the JCPOA if they tear it out.

However, Trump unlike his comments during his election campaign has so far been committed to this document.

Even US Treasury Department endorsed the �Boeing's commitment to deliver 80 aircrafts to Iran recently.

On Sept 21, the Treasury Department granted the aviation giants Airbus and Boeing licenses to deliver planes to Tehran.

Iran-Europe inevitable closeness

In light of the transition of power in US, the relations between Iran and Europe fostered better than what it was supposed.

America introspection policy with Iran on one hand and the need for tackling security problems and dealing with Daesh terrorist groups on the other hand, indicated that Europe needs Iran more than before.

On the other hand, flourishing the Iranian market and luring the European companies to cooperate with the Iranian side, have forced the European governments to approach Iran.

Also, several trade European delegations and high-ranking officials have recently traveled to Iran.

Europeans even have declared that if America withdraws from the signatory countries of JCPOA, they would remain committed to the historical deal.

In Feb 2017, the European Union (EU) and the United Nations� nuclear agency have reaffirmed their support for the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and six other countries.

But this convergence was more lip service than action because the European banks and big corporations refused serious cooperation with Iran.

Under pressure of US, the European companies are afraid of boosting ties with Iran due to heavy American penalties. And the US has not yet removed its sanctions against Iran.

Possibility of Iran-Canada renewal of ties

Canada was another Western country which stopped its relations with Iran under pressure of the Israeli lobby.

After victory of new Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a positive outlook is assumed on the future of relations between the two countries.

And even the foreign ministers of the two countries held talks with each other which were mainly focused on freedom of an Iranian-Canadian citizen.

For sure, the pressure exerted by Iranians living in Canada to travel and communicate with Iran has also played an effective role in resuming relations between Iran and Canada.

Recently, Canadian embassy in Iran has released the documents showing that inept pressure of Canadian Foreign Ministry for closing its embassy in Tehran.

The opening of Canadian embassy in Tehran seems likely by the direct order of Trudeau in the Iranian New Year.

In 2016, Trudeau says his country is getting ready to resume diplomatic relations with Iran following a four-year break in ties.

It seems that West�s commitment to JCPOA would be considered as the most important challenge facing Iran and the West during the Persian News Year.

Meanwhile, the Western countries have pinned their eyes on the upcoming presidential election in Iran while�thinking about the possibility of changing their negotiating partner in Iran in autumn of 2017.
