Envoys of 10 int’l bodies visit flood-hit Ahvaz villages

IRNA – Representatives from ten international organizations visited flood-stricken villages of southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz, a senior provincial official announced on Tuesday.

Hamid Silavi, director general of Bureau of Aliens and Foreign Immigrant Affairs of southwestern province of Khuzestan, told IRNA.

The 31-member international delegation included representatives from United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Relief International, Caritas relief agency, Doctors Without Borders (MSF), UN humanitarian assistance and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

The aim of the travel of members of international bodies to Iran is to assess the situation of the country’s flood-stricken areas.

Two million Iranians have been affected by heavy rain and flooding which have started in west, southwest, south and northeast of Iran days before the beginning of Norouz, Iranian New Year, claimed lives of over 70 Iranians, wounded over 1,000 and displaced about 280,000.

Currently, relief efforts have been made by Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and Army forces and volunteers who have joined them in the flood-hit areas.
